PRACTICAL GUIDE / 72-HOUR EMERGENCY KIT

What to pack in an emergency kit.

Home supplies and an evacuation bag serve different purposes. Start with what you have and adapt the checklist to your household.

Water and food for 72 hours

Store enough drinking water for each person and pet. Needs vary with heat, age and health. Keep shelf-stable food that needs no cooking, plus a manual can opener if needed. Check dates and rotate supplies.

Power outage essentials

Keep a flashlight, spare batteries, a charged power bank and a portable radio. Write down important contacts and keep some cash. Never use generators, grills or charcoal burners indoors.

Emergency go bag and evacuation

Pack a sturdy, easy-to-carry bag with copies of documents, keys, a phone and charger, regular medication, water, warm clothing and hygiene items. Keep it light enough to carry and follow local emergency instructions.

First aid and your family’s needs

Gather first-aid supplies and check each person’s medication regularly. Consider babies, older adults, people with disabilities and pets. Store everything in an accessible place.
